NAMINGS Baby namings are something of a rarity for me, in four years I have conducted only four of them and two of these were integral parts of a wedding ceremony.
Nevertheless, a baby naming is a great way to welcome a new child into its family and community and they can be great fun and very moving.
A major reason for choosing a humanist ceremony is that it does not commit the child to any particular belief system and leaves the child free to make such a decision later in life once they have lived a little!
The emphasis of the naming ceremonies that I have conducted has been on the role and responsibility of the child's family and friends in raising the child.
Like most humanist ceremonies there is usually music and poetry, some vows or promises and, unsurprisingly, some drinking or a toast! There are no specific rituals involved but I have done ceremonies where the child has been passed around each of the audience or where we have formed a circle around the child. Needless to say I am open to suggestions!
Although I have relatively little material to go on I have prepared a sample script which you are welcome to inspect, just click on the document title below.
